Artsy Stuff
Here’s a sampling of some of the artsy creations I’ve made. While my primary medium of choice is oil pastel, and, more specifically Sennelier oil pastels, I also dabble a bit in pens and am known to try my hand at computer-based art, too.
Girl in Water Mosaic
Created this one in January-February 2009. I ended up getting a collection of Copic markers for work stuff and decided to try them out by doodling something. I actually got the idea for this picture from a tutorial on Deviantart.
Beyond just Copic sketch markers I also used some Copic multiliner SP pens for outlining and filling in some of the eye colors.
I’ll say this, drawing water is hard!
El Fauno (in pen)
My second pen picture entitled (for Chad) "el fauno" (it really should be "la fauna" but I can’t tell if there’s a feminine version in Spanish).
This picture was done on thicker poster paper, which did have a significant effect on how the colors appeared and blended.
[And to give proper credit, I totally got this scene idea from a painting I saw at Ritual in SF]
Dreamy Mermaid (in pen)
Here’s my first real "go" at pens. As has been pointed out to me a zillion times, to say that I’m a fan of Van Gogh is a bit of an understatement. It would also be an understatement to say I have a bit of a thing for mermaids.
Angry Mermaid (in oil pastel)
Here we have a mermaid I painted during the summer of 2007. This is actually an unfinished version. While I was working on this I was, we’ll say, a little upset … and that’s being reflected in the fact that she’s gone ahead and bitten the head of an unsuspecting fish (it’s hard to tell, but the fish’s tail is coming out of mouth and she’s clutching its tailless bleeding body in her hand). So,you may gather, I was a bit upset.
Eventually those feelings were worked though and I got rid of the fish eating bit. Below you’ll see the completed, less enraged, version.
Hey, if art isn’t a form of therapy, I don’t know what is!
Significantly Less Angry Mermaid (in oil pastel)
Here’s the final version of the oil pastel mermaid. As you can see, the decapitated fish has been removed.
Earth Girl (in lots of things)
In contrast to the above, here’s an artsy creation made during excited, electric, and generally more quixotic, times!
While mainly done in oil pastel, this should be classified as mixed media - I bought some special wood-looking paper and ripped it up to add some texture to the tree and also used a gold-metallic pen to make the magical looking vines going from her fingers up the tree.
